Onam festival is a quintessential part of the identity of Keralites. Onam is truly an all-inclusive festival that is celebrated across caste-religious divides in Kerala. However, the understanding of the origins of Onam festival and the central figures in its legend Vāmana and Mahabali seems to have undergone many distortions to the extent that most Malayalis who celebrate the festival today do not know of many of its significant aspects. It came as a shock to me few years back when I did some reading on this festival, and realised how little I knew of this most important event in Kerala. And so began my attempt to rediscover Onam for myself. Read More

Missing the hills and the Sangha.
Kashmir Great Lakes trek! Four years since my second week long trek to the seven great lakes of Kashmir. I remember feeling exhausted mostly through my first trek two years before this when I was working full time in my corporate job and before starting on the yoga path. I really wished I was more healthy, so I could soak in the beauty that was all around. This trek happened after I quit Amazon and three retreats after I founded @yogasalain. I found myself healthier, happier and as we began the trek, the trek leader invited me to lead the warm up prep and unwinding for each day with yoga! It was the coolest (and literally coldest lol) experience to journey with this 20 members odd group from around the world, trekking 16-18 kms daily covering valleys of flowers, bouldering, scaling peaks in snow and rain and feeling the fear every time the feet slips on a downhill climb, learning to trust each other to hold on to, trusting the bhūmi to support the next step, looking up at the starry cloudless sky at night and watching the Milky Way (ākāsa ganga) from 16K feet high....for me the entire experience was yoga in action. Each challenge and learning bringing alive the Yogasutras and Sānkhya view of the world. Watching change (parināma) and the underlying gati (direction), niyati (meaningfulness), and sanghtana (interdependence).

Onam Ashamsakal - Om vāmana mūrtaye nama:
The word Yoga usually brings up an image of someone doing asana-pranayama or someone sitting for meditation.āsanā and prāṇāyāmā brings mastery over our body and breath. Meditation happens as a result of the process of preparing the mind and focusing it on a specific object. A key component of Yoga that is often missed out between these two aspects is that of “inner work” i.e. discovering a way in which we can observe the inner workings of our mind and ask the question “In doing what I am doing what am I really doing?”. This is also referred to as antaraṅga sādanā.
